Which Sorong flight are you actually booked on?
Start with the e-ticket, not with any website, this one included. Bali to Sorong is a thin route. Services appear, get retimed and disappear between seasons, and the aggregators rarely agree with each other.
Here is what the listings we checked in September 2026 showed. FlightConnections and fltmapper listed a Garuda Indonesia service numbered GA 686 from Ngurah Rai (DPS) to Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong (SOQ), roughly once a week on a Boeing 737-800, with an Etihad codeshare number (EY 8104). FlightRoutes gave a 01:40 departure but named a different operating day. We could not confirm this nonstop in a timetable published by Garuda itself, so read it as “a late-night nonstop, if it operates on your date”.

Every time in this table is subject to change, and seasonal retiming is common on eastern Indonesia routes. Sorong runs on Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT), one hour ahead of Bali (WITA), so a flight of about three hours looks like four on the clock.
Why is a 01:40 departure the most common booking mistake?
Because the date on the ticket is the day after the night you spend in Bali. A flight printed as Friday, 01:40 means you leave the hotel on Thursday evening, so the room you need is Thursday night.
Travellers who book Friday night turn up to a hotel with no reservation for them, or pay for a bed they never sleep in. Two habits prevent it:
- Read the departure date inside the airline app or e-ticket, not the subject line of a confirmation email.
- Give the hotel your flight number and time when you reserve. A front desk that knows will usually spot the mismatch.
Book a full night rather than relying on late checkout if you can. The room is ready when you arrive, you can sleep from early evening, and nobody knocks on the door at 18:00.
What does a realistic departure-night timeline look like?
This working schedule assumes you hold the late-night nonstop at the times listed above and that your hotel is within about 25 minutes of the airport off-peak. If your ticket shows a different time, shift every row by the same amount. Rain, temple ceremonies and holiday weeks all stretch Bali drive times, so add buffer rather than trimming it.

With children, move dinner to 16:30 and let them sleep in their travel clothes. Carrying a sleeping child to the car at 22:30 is far easier than dressing one.
Should you sleep before a 01:30 departure or stay up?
Sleep, even if it’s only three hours. On that schedule you land around 05:40, and the first Waisai ferry in the timetables we checked sails at 09:00, so the evening nap is most of the rest you’ll get before Raja Ampat. Three setups work:
- One full night, early to bed. The default. Check in mid-afternoon, sleep 19:00 to 22:00, car at 22:30.
- Late checkout where you already are. Good if you’d rather not change hotels on the last day. Ask how late the room can be held and what it costs, then leave before evening traffic builds.
- Two nights at the same hotel. Best for families or anyone arriving on a long-haul flight. The room is already yours on departure day, so afternoon naps happen in a bed, not a lobby.
Staying up all night rarely pays off. People who try it tend to doze through the ferry crossing and lose their first afternoon on the water.
How does the plan change on a 07:00 connection through Makassar?
You gain a normal night’s sleep and lose the same-day ferry. Trip.com listed Lion Air JT944 leaving Bali at 07:00 and reaching Sorong at 14:45 when we checked in September 2026, and FlightRoutes put a Makassar connection at roughly 6h35 in total. Both are subject to change. On those times, the 14:00 sailing to Waisai has gone before you land.
- Night before: early dinner, bags packed by 21:00, lights out by 22:00.
- 04:00: alarm. Many hotels will prepare a breakfast box if you ask the day before.
- 04:30–05:00: car leaves for DPS.
- Mid-afternoon (WIT): land in Sorong and transfer to a hotel in town.
- Next morning: first ferry to Waisai.
In the wet season, ask for 3–4 hours between connecting flights. A missed connection on a route with so few daily options can cost you a full day.

The Raja Ampat conservation area service tariff for foreign tourists is IDR 1,000,000 per person per year; children under 12 and people with disabilities are exempt, as set in Pergub Papua Barat Daya No. 32/2024. The tariff for domestic tourists is IDR 500,000 per person per year (IDR 250,000 for holders of non-Papua Barat Daya ID cards living in Tanah Papua; IDR 150,000 for Papua Barat Daya ID holders). A regency tourism levy set by Raja Ampat Regency comes on top and is confirmed at booking. You can pay online through the Marine Park Authority portal, or in person at Sorong harbour or the Waisai office. Rates are subject to change, so check the current figure before paying.
What happens after you land in Sorong?
If you slept in Bali and land around 05:40, the morning ferry is easy to make:
- On landing: collect bags at SOQ. Some booking sites, Expedia and KAYAK among them, still show the older “Sorong Jefman” label for this code.
- Around 06:30: meet your driver. The ride to the ferry port takes 15–20 minutes.
- 09:00: ferry to Waisai. Luxury Raja Ampat puts the crossing at about two hours.
The Sorong–Waisai timetables we checked for September 2026 showed daily sailings at 09:00 and 14:00 in both directions, with only the 14:00 sailing on public holidays. Ferry times change too, so confirm with your driver or at the harbour the day before. If your landing falls on a holiday, a day room in Sorong turns a seven-hour wait into a second sleep.
Guests on a private boat arranged through Komodo Luxury may board at a different time and place from the public ferry. The reservations team confirms boarding details for each itinerary.
What if the Sorong flight is cancelled or retimed?
With a nonstop that, where it operates, flies about once a week, you can’t simply wait for tomorrow’s flight. Protect yourself before it happens:
- Book the Bali room on a rate you can change or cancel.
- Know your fallback: a connection through Makassar or Jakarta, which usually means a night in Sorong.
- Tell your boat team as soon as the airline notifies you, so boarding can be reviewed.
- Check whether your travel insurance covers missed departures and extra hotel nights.
None of this guarantees the original plan survives, but it keeps a schedule change from turning into a lost trip.
When should you lock in the Bali room?
Bali fills up from June to September, while Raja Ampat’s seas are generally calmer from October to April. Komodo Luxury’s reservations team reports that July, August and Christmas weeks are requested first. Park tickets are issued for specific dates, so fix your travel date, then the boat, then the Bali room, and only then the flight-dependent car times.
If you are flying into Bali from abroad, pay Bali’s IDR 150,000 tourist levy for international tourists through the provincial Love Bali app. It is separate from the Raja Ampat fees above.
