Sorong-Waisai Ferry Timetable 2026: Making the Boat After a Morning Flight

As of mid-2026, the realistic target after a morning flight into Sorong is the 14:00 WIT fast ferry to Waisai. RRI Sorong reported that from 1 June 2026, PT Belibis Papua Mandiri runs one sailing Monday to Saturday at 14:00 and two on Sunday, at 09:00 and 14:00. Treat these times as indicative and reconfirm before travel.

This page covers the boat only: the reported timetable, why other schedules online disagree, and what to do when the sailing you wanted is full or not running. For anyone travelling from Bali to Raja Ampat, the ferry is the last fixed link in the chain. A good flight is wasted if the boat left an hour earlier.

What is the Sorong-Waisai ferry timetable in 2026?

The most recent dated report we found comes from RRI Sorong, the state broadcaster’s regional station. Its article of 28 May 2026 quotes Misbahuddin, president director of PT Belibis Papua Mandiri, announcing a reduced schedule from 1 June 2026. All times are Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT, UTC+9). Bali is one hour behind, on UTC+8.

Day Departures reported from 1 June 2026 (WIT) Approx. arrival at the other harbour
Monday to Saturday 14:00 only About 16:00
Sunday 09:00 and 14:00 About 11:00 and 16:00

Three caveats apply to that table:

  • Direction. The RRI report describes the Sorong-Waisai fast ferry but does not split times by harbour. Confirm the Waisai-to-Sorong departure separately before fixing your last night in Raja Ampat.
  • Crossing time. Ocean Earth Travels puts the crossing at about two hours in calm seas. A rough day or slow loading can add to that.
  • Change at short notice. According to the same guide, the operator adjusts its rotation to demand and sometimes announces changes only days ahead.

According to RRI, the cut followed rising fuel and spare-part costs and a weaker rupiah. The operator said ticket prices had not changed in 16 years and that a request to raise them had been turned down by the provincial government.

Why do timetables online show different times?

Because the route has had several patterns in a short period, and many pages are never updated. Here is how the sources we checked compare.

Source Date What it reports
RRI Sorong, quoting PT Belibis Papua Mandiri Published 28 May 2026 From 1 June 2026, 14:00 Monday to Saturday, 09:00 and 14:00 on Sunday. Before that, two sailings ran on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday
Ocean Earth Travels 2026 guide A fuller rotation with a 09:00 boat on some days in the diving season, roughly November to April, and 14:00 only for the rest of the year
Jawapos May 2026 Monday, Tuesday and Thursday listed as 14:00-only days; Express Bahari and Belibis Group named as operators on the route

The sources do not agree on which days carried the second sailing. What they share is the 14:00 departure as the constant. As of mid-September 2026, we had not found a published announcement bringing the 09:00 boat back for the coming season. If a hotel page, blog or old screenshot shows a daily 09:00 sailing, check its date before you rely on it.

Can you make the 14:00 ferry on the day you fly in?

Usually, if your flight lands in Sorong by late morning. Most routings from Bali connect through Makassar or Jakarta, and you lose an hour to the time-zone change on the way east. Work backwards from the 14:00 sailing.

Your landing time at Sorong (WIT) Verdict What has to go right
By about 12:00 Workable Bags come out on time, driver waiting, tickets bought at the counter
About 12:00 to 13:00 Tight A pre-booked driver, and ideally someone already holding tickets at the harbour
After 13:00 Plan a night in Sorong Take the next day’s 14:00 boat, or the 09:00 on a Sunday

These buffers are planning guidance, not operator rules. A delayed connection in Makassar is the most common way the plan breaks, so leave more slack than feels necessary.

What happens between the airport and the harbour?

Plan to be at the harbour about an hour before sailing. The boat is simple, but several small steps happen on the dock:

  • The drive. Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) is roughly a 15-20 minute drive from the harbour. According to Paparisahomestay, Grab and Gojek may not pick up at the airport or the harbour, so pre-book a driver.
  • Tickets. Ocean Earth Travels reports that tickets are sold at the harbour office only, with no online booking. It also notes the boat can sell out on busy days.
  • Park fees. The Marine Park Entry Permit and the regency tourism levy can be paid at Sorong harbour, but a queue there eats into a tight margin. Paying online through the Marine Park Authority portal removes that step.
  • Luggage. Dive bags and large suitcases take longer to stow than a carry-on.

If you would rather have one party book the driver, buy tickets and meet you in Waisai, the Sorong airport to Waisai transfer shows how those pieces are timed around each sailing.

Which dates need extra care?

We found no published holiday timetable for this route. Holidays still matter, because demand bunches up while there is only one boat on most days. Komodo Luxury reports that July, August and the Christmas weeks are the first dates requested for Raja Ampat trips. The dates below come from the 2026 and 2027 national holiday decrees (SKB 3 Menteri), as reported by Detik and Kompas TV. Islamic holidays can move by a day once the lunar sighting is confirmed.

Dates Occasion Why it matters
24 Dec 2026 to 1 Jan 2027 Christmas and New Year Peak demand on a single 14:00 boat most days
5 to 6 Feb 2027 Chinese New Year Domestic travel rises
8 to 15 Mar 2027 Nyepi, Idul Fitri and leave days The busiest travel week of the year in Indonesia
25 to 28 Mar 2027 Good Friday and Easter A long weekend inside the diving season
17 to 20 May 2027 Idul Adha, Vesak and leave days Four holiday or leave days in a row
17 Aug 2027 Independence Day Local events; reconfirm sailings

On any of these dates, ask the reservations team to reconfirm the sailing a few days before travel and again the day before.

What if the sailing you need is full or cancelled?

You have three workable fallbacks. Each one costs money, time or comfort.

Fallback When it fits Trade-offs Confirm first
Overnight in Sorong, 14:00 ferry next day Flight delay, full boat or rough weather One extra night and a lost day in the park Hotel near the harbour, driver, whether the next day’s sailing is confirmed
Overnight in Sorong, 09:00 ferry on Sunday You land late on a Saturday Early start; Sunday’s 09:00 boat was reported, not guaranteed That the Sunday morning sailing is still running
Private speedboat, arranged via vetted licensed partners A yacht, resort or guide is already waiting in Waisai Priced per boat on request, not per seat; comfort depends on sea state Operator licence, life jackets, luggage limit, latest departure accepted, written quote

Does the season affect the crossing?

Yes, mostly in comfort. Raja Ampat’s waters are generally calmer from October to April. Outside that window the crossing can be bumpier, and a small private speedboat deserves a more conservative call. Motion-sensitive travellers should take the larger public ferry wherever possible.

Which fees should you settle before boarding?

As of 2026, and subject to change:

  1. Marine Park Entry Permit: the Raja Ampat conservation area service tariff for foreign tourists is IDR 1,000,000 per person per year; children under 12 and people with disabilities are exempt, as set in Pergub Papua Barat Daya No. 32/2024.
  2. Regency tourism levy: set by Raja Ampat Regency and confirmed at booking.

Because the permit lasts 12 months, a missed sailing or an extra night in Sorong does not mean paying again.

How should you plan around the ferry?

  1. Fix your Raja Ampat dates first, then check each travel day against the table of busy dates above.
  2. Pick flights that land in Sorong by late morning if you want the same-day 14:00 boat.
  3. Reconfirm the timetable a few days before travel and again the day before, with the reservations team or at the harbour.
  4. Pre-book the harbour driver rather than relying on ride-hailing apps.
  5. Pay park fees online so a queue does not decide whether you make the boat.
  6. Confirm the return sailing from Waisai before booking your onward flight out of Sorong, and leave a wide gap between the two.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a 09:00 ferry from Sorong to Waisai in September 2026?

According to RRI Sorong, from 1 June 2026 the 09:00 departure runs on Sunday only, with a single 14:00 sailing Monday to Saturday. We had not found an announcement restoring a daily morning boat as of mid-September 2026. Treat both times as indicative and reconfirm with the reservations team a few days before you travel.

What happens if I miss the 14:00 ferry after my flight?

On most days it is the only public sailing, so plan a night in Sorong near the harbour and take the next day’s 14:00 boat, or the 09:00 if the next day is Sunday. If a yacht or resort is waiting in Waisai, a private speedboat arranged via vetted licensed partners may work, priced per boat on request.

Do public holidays change the Sorong-Waisai ferry timetable?

We found no published holiday timetable for the route, so there is no confirmed holiday rule. Holidays do raise demand, and tickets are sold only at the harbour office, so a single boat can fill. Around Christmas, Idul Fitri and long weekends, ask the reservations team to reconfirm your sailing and consider arriving in Sorong a day early.
