Go Bali first if you are arriving on a long-haul flight and want to catch the early-morning DPS-Sorong departures rested; go Raja Ampat first if your international flight lands in Jakarta or you want Bali waiting as recovery at the end. In the peak months, let the boat dates decide, because they are harder to move.
Why does the order matter so much on this route?
Ngurah Rai International (DPS) and Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok (SOQ) are about three hours apart by nonstop jet, and that nonstop is thin. FlightConnections and fltmapper snapshots from September 2026 show Garuda Indonesia GA 686 as the DPS-SOQ nonstop, operating roughly once a week on a Boeing 737-800. At the Raja Ampat end, three fixed clocks are waiting:
- The ferry. Sorong to Waisai takes about two hours. Under the schedule effective 1 September 2026 it runs daily at 09:00 and 14:00 in both directions, and only at 14:00 on public holidays.
- The park. Raja Ampat works on dated tickets. Komodo Luxury’s standing advice is to fix the date before choosing the boat name.
- The yacht. Every Komodo Luxury departure is a whole-boat charter for set dates, with captain, crew and private chef.
The order you choose decides which of those clocks a long-haul delay hits. That is why a private tour from Bali is normally built backwards from the sailing dates, with Bali nights slotted in before or after.
When is Bali first the better call?
Bali first wins for most travellers flying in from Europe, the Americas or the Gulf. Here is why:
- Jet lag. Two or three nights on land let your body clock settle before a domestic red-eye.
- The Garuda nonstop. GA 686 leaves DPS between 01:30 and 01:40 and lands in Sorong at 05:40 local time. Sorong runs on Eastern Indonesia Time, one hour ahead of Bali. The airport-to-port drive is 15 to 20 minutes, so the 09:00 Waisai ferry is realistic. Doing that red-eye on the night you land from a 14-hour flight is not.
- A built-in buffer. If your international connection slips, you lose a Bali night instead of a charter day.
- One international ticket. A simple round trip in and out of DPS usually works.
When should Raja Ampat come first?
Raja Ampat first makes sense in three situations.
- Your international flight lands in Jakarta. CGK is already one of the two hubs on the one-stop routing to Sorong, so heading east from there saves a leg. You then fly Sorong to Bali after the boat and go home from DPS on an open-jaw ticket.

FlightRoutes counts about 13 flights a week across Garuda, Lion Air, Batik Air and Pelita Air. According to Paparisahomestay, Grab and Gojek may not pick up at Sorong Airport or the harbour, so pre-arrange that transfer whichever way round you travel.
Does the season change the answer?
Yes, mostly by changing which side is scarce. Bali peaks from June to September and during holiday weeks. Raja Ampat seas are generally calmer from October to April.
- July, August and Christmas: secure the yacht first, then book Bali hotels around it. Accept whichever order those dates produce.
- October to April: yachts are easier to move, but wet-season connections run longer. Bali first with a spare night is the lower-risk shape.
How do fees and paperwork shift with the order?

- Arrival card. Since 1 September 2025 Indonesia uses one digital arrival card with a QR code. You complete it for your international entry point, DPS or CGK.
- Bali levy. Bali’s tourist levy for international tourists is IDR 150,000, paid through the Love Bali app, which went live on 14 February 2024, as listed on Love Bali, Bali Provincial Government (checked 2026-09-16).
