Who should choose Jakarta?
Jakarta suits a specific kind of trip:
- You want a full last day in Bali, with lunch in Ubud and an evening departure instead of a pre-dawn checkout.
- You are already in Jakarta for business, or landing there on an international flight.
- Your Makassar options are poor. Full flights or a five-hour wait make CGK the practical hub on that date.
Skip Jakarta if overnights wear you down, or if your date lines up with GA 686. FlightRoutes lists its 01:40 departures on Thursday, Friday or Sunday, and a nonstop usually beats a backtrack.
Raja Ampat seas are generally calmer October-April. In the wet season, ask for a 3-4 hour connection at CGK, not the minimum.
Is a transit night needed?
It depends on when you land in Sorong. From Sorong Airport the harbour is a 15-20 minute drive. Under the schedule in force since 1 September 2026, the Sorong-Waisai ferry sails daily at 09:00 and 14:00 in both directions, with only the 14:00 boat on public holidays. The crossing takes about two hours, according to Luxury Raja Ampat.

There are two clean ways to do it:
- Raja Ampat first, Bali last. Clear immigration at CGK, connect to Sorong, sail, then fly Sorong to Bali for a post-trip stay.
- Bali first, Raja Ampat after. Fly CGK to Bali for your pre-trip nights, then use option A, B or C above.
Since 1 September 2025, Indonesia’s arrival card, customs declaration and health form are one digital arrival card with a QR code; complete it before flying. If your long-haul lands late or sits on a separate ticket, book the CGK airport hotel night rather than a tight self-transfer.
